4/10 Weekly Email

Hi all,

I have a few reminders, updates, and spotlights this week.

First, Newsletter. Our Quarter 2 newsletter is now out and we can finally announce the winners of our second Employee of the Quarter program. Click the attached copy to view them and check out the other content. You will also be able to see this newsletter and all former copies on our website’s newsletter page. We will update bulletin boards with copies of this newsletter and other updates in the next few weeks.

Second, Elections. We plan to start our annual election process this coming week on Thursday, April 17th. You will be able to nominate yourself or others for roles starting on Thursday - I’ll send the link in my weekly email. Nominations will be accepted from 4/17/25 to 5/1/25 and all eligible candidates will be announced shortly after the nomination period closes. If needed, campaigning will occur between 5/2/25 and 6/1/25, then voting will take place the first week of June. Please send any immediate questions to president@uaeatempe.com. Per our bylaws, we will turn things over to the Election Committee as of next week and they will run things from there.

Third, Scholarship: As a reminder, our annual college scholarship program closes on Friday, April 18th, at midnight. Applicants have a little more than 1 week to complete their application and submit - we will begin reviewing submissions immediately after the portal closes.

Fourth, Member Meeting. Our next membership meeting will be on Thursday, April 17th, from 12-1pm at the Kiwanis Recreation Center. Find more details (and a Google Calendar event) here. We have a lot going on and will probably treat this meeting as an extended Q+A for members  - if you can’t make it, I’ll publish our meeting minutes (and member questions) in my normal weekly update. Please rsvp here by Tuesday, April 15th at 5pm.

Fifth, Adopt-A-Path. Members of the UAEA Board will be meeting on Sunday, April 27th at 7:00AM to clean up our Adopt-A-Path trail. We meet in the Tempe Parking Lot on the southeast Corner of Curry and Miller (approximate address is 1325 E Curry Road, Tempe AZ 85281, see attached photo), then walk north up our path to Mckellips Rd. Breakfast, drinks, safety gloves, trash pickers, and trash bags will be provided. Please bring a hat and/or sunglasses. This event normally takes 1.5-2 hours to complete, is eligible for community wellness points, and is a great opportunity to meet members of the board and your fellow union members. If you’d like to attend, please sign up here by Thursday, April 24th at 5PM.

Sixth, Upcoming and Ongoing Events. I wanted to highlight some upcoming and ongoing events happening in and around Tempe. CuldeSac Tempe has a monthly artisan market in their main courtyard - the next one will be this Saturday, April 12th, from 10am-2pm. Find more information here. Downtown Tempe also has a monthly artisan market in the plaza next to City Hall - the last one of this season will be this Sunday, April 13th, from 10AM-3PM and will have a variety of events, artists, and performances related to Earth Month. Find more information here. If you’re looking for things to do with your family over the next few months, check out Tempe’s list of family events here - there’s information about the free weekly movies in the park, free museum events, Tempe’s summer camp programs, and many other activities. Finally, if you’re looking for something to do for yourself, Tempe offers a variety of adult recreational classes at very reasonable prices - my wife and I have taken several pottery classes at the Edna Vihel center and can strongly recommend their facilities. You can see their complete offerings here - besides art classes there are a variety of sports, fitness, martial arts, language, and boating opportunities available. I’m aware many of our members don’t live in Tempe - you can still apply even if you’re not a resident. If you don’t want to drive to Tempe on weekends, check out whether there’s a local community college or arts center in your area - I’ve taken glass-blowing classes at Mesa Center for the Arts, for instance, and believe there are a number of excellent program offerings across the Valley.

Thanks for a great week everyone!
