1/8 Weekly Email

Hi all,

I just have a few updates and reminders this week.

MLK Breakfast: The annual MLK Breakfast is happening this coming Monday, January 12th, from 8am-10am at Tempe Buttes. UAEA has one more spot open at our table - if you’re interested in attending, please email me by tomorrow, January 9th, at 5PM.

Additional information on the event can be found here.

Health challenge: If you need some extra incentive to work towards some health goals in 2026, there will be a nutrition challenge on healthymetempe.com from January 12th to February 6th. If you log 100 servings of fruits and vegetables between those dates you will be entered into several drawings for gift cards. The challenge period is 25 days so you only need to eat an average of 4 servings a day and serving sizes for vegetables are usually smaller than you think - 12 baby carrots, 8 strawberries, a small salad, or 8 cherry tomatoes usually meet a serving size. You can see more normal serving sizes here or see some visual references of serving sizes here.

Please also remember to keep working towards your Health Insurance Incentive. If you log 100 points by April 30th, you’ll receive a discount of $27 per paycheck on health insurance, or $702/year. It’s pretty easy to get to that point with only a few hours of work - I wrote a quick guide to getting points in January of last year and you can review it here. Tempe just sent out information about scheduling your biometric screenings (the results of which are worth at least 50 points towards your 100 point total) - you can see that in the attached pdf.

Employee Development Classes: Employee Development has an updated calendar out with new classes for Spring 2026. I’ve attached an email that includes class dates - it has links if you’d like to sign up for anything. Of the classes on offer I can speak highly about their Crucial Conversations, Crucial Influence, and Getting Things Done classes - I think the classes cover practical skills that can be applied to nearly every job in the City. That’s not to say the other classes aren’t also valuable - I just don’t have personal experience with them.

Mobile Mammograms: The City is once again offering free mammograms through the Mobile Mammography group throughout the month of January. They also have a new service this year that will provide even more accurate cancer detection for an extra $40 - while not free, the cost could be covered by your Flexible Spending Accounts or Mediflex accounts. 13% of women (1 in 8) will develop breast cancer at some point during their life and 2.3% of those with breast cancer will die from it - it’s really worth it to take advantage of this resource if you’re covered by Tempe insurance.

January Member Meeting(s): UAEA will be having its first-ever annual members meeting on January 15th. This meeting will go over what UAEA worked on in 2025, what we’re planning to do in 2026, upcoming opportunities for member involvement, and will have a little time for one-on-one questions with the board. We are planning to do two sessions on January 15th, one at 5:30am at TMOC Building 1 (2090 W Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ), and one at 12pm at the Tempe Historical Museum (809 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ). Both sessions will be available virtually if you can’t attend in person, but we’d love to see as many members as possible. You can rsvp here for both sessions and submit questions in advance. Please rsvp by tomorrow, January 9th, by 5PM.

Thanks for a great week, all, and see you next year!
